My new book Plenty: A Memoir of Food and Family is officially born on Wednesday, September 1. Happy birthday, Plenty! Cue the candles and the singing.
As book launch day quickly approaches…well, I’m a flurry of excitement and nerves.
If you live in the NYC area, I hope you join me and brilliant cookbook author Shin Kim on Wednesday evening at Powerhouse Arena in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Shin might even have some cookies for you, and let me tell you, these cookies are ridiculously delicious. We’ll be chatting about the book, women in the food industry, and post-pandemic life.
In more bookish news, I joined Alicia Kennedy, one of my favorite food writers (no, writer writers!) for her weekly newsletter, which you can find here. She said about my writing, “She gives of herself and her experiences with such vulnerability and verve, to the point that I wanted to ask her if she is holding something back for herself.” The answer is…sometimes.
You can read the intro of Plenty over at Salon if you want to get a taste, bad pun intended.
I also got to chat about one of my favorite childhood books, Lois Lowry’s stunning Number the Stars on the SSR podcast. (That stands for Sh*t She Read, in case you were wondering). The book is as sad as I remembered (I sobbed my way through much of it), but it’s also full of light and hope. It certainly stood the test of time.
In other news, I wrote about lasagna pans for Saveur, if that’s your thing. Isn’t lasagna everyone’s thing?
I also wrote about sight in my “Writing the Senses” column over at Catapult. Writing about writing is hard and awkward, but I’m going to keep trying.
Back to Plenty.
This book contains a big scoop of my heart, and some huge generosity from the people who bravely let me write about them. I hope you enjoy it and I hope it brings you some light. Here’s to plenty of great food from women working together for a better world, a world of plenty…
xo,
H
